When it comes to the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), there are a few important points you should know about Nexium. Nexium is the brand name for esomeprazole magnesium. You can take Nexium with or without food.
This medication is used to treat GERD and also to treat stomach problems caused by acid reflux.
If you are using Nexium, you should make sure you are taking this medication for the full duration of your treatment. If you have been told by your doctor that you should not take this medication, please stop taking it and see your doctor right away.
Nexium should not be used in people with stomach ulcers, who have a known allergy to esomeprazole magnesium, or who are taking NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn).
Nexium is not for use in children, unless the patient tells you so.
This medication may not be right for you if you have been told by your doctor that you need to take Nexium. If you have been told by your doctor that you need to take Nexium, please tell your doctor right away.
If you are also taking another drug to treat acid reflux, such as Zantac (Lanoxin), or a drug to treat a type of ulcers, you should tell your doctor that you are taking Nexium.
If you are taking the antacid at a different time than the one on your prescription, please use a different time to take Nexium.
You should continue taking Nexium for as long as necessary, even if the patient is taking the medication. Stopping the medication too soon can cause serious side effects.
Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
Nexium should not be used for the treatment of stomach problems caused by ulcers, if you have a history of heart problems, kidney disease, heart surgery, or if you have had any other serious medical problems.

Adults and children over 12 years: Take one tablet 3 to 4 hours before or 6 to 7 hours after meals. Do not take for more than 7 days. Do not exceed the stated dose. Nexium 24HR 20 mg enteric coated tablets for the lasting symptomatic relief of frequent heartburn, acid regurgitation and other symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Always take this medicine exactly as described in the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is one tablet a day. - Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don't feel an improvement immediately. - You may need to take Nexium 24HR for a few days before experiencing the full effect. - Nexium 24HR should be taken for at least 7 days and up to 14 days. - Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you do not feel better while taking Nexium 24HR. If symptoms persist or recur within 2 weeks of completing the course, consult your doctor. Further examination may be required.
