AstraZeneca's (AZN) lawsuit against Pfizer for the illegal sale of Nexium in the United States
In October 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized over $12 million worth of the prescription drug Nexium in the United States. The federal suit alleges that AstraZeneca failed to warn doctors and pharmacists of the potential for Nexium to cause cancer.
The drug's manufacturer, AstraZeneca, had already withdrawn the drug in November 2011, after the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing of the drug as an over-the-counter drug. In August 2012, the FDA approved the new drug for sale, but it failed to approve the product as the safety of the drug indicated that the product was more effective. AstraZeneca had previously marketed the drug for a $1 per pill in the United States, but the new drug was found to be ineffective.
The FDA's action is the result of the AstraZeneca's extensive marketing campaign that resulted in thousands of prescriptions for Nexium from doctors and pharmacists and the failure of the drug to meet safety standards.
